JustMilk is developing a Nipple Shield Delivery System (NSDS) that can be used by mothers to effectively deliver drugs and nutrients to infants while they breastfeed. To use the device, a tablet is inserted inside the modified nipple shield and the mother places it over her breast. As she breastfeeds, milk passes around the insert causing the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the tablet to be released directly into the breast milk and consumed by the infant. The tablet can be placed inside the nipple shield prior to each feed, or preloaded and disposed of after the feed. APIs delivered to infants include antibiotics, antimalarials, antiretrovirals, vitamins, nutrients, or probiotics. The NSDS can be implemented in regions where a nutrient/drug delivery system is needed due to poor hygiene and drug distribution. The device addresses some of the issues with current delivery systems, such as the need to mix doses with potentially unsterilized water and the quick expiration of liquid treatments. In addition, the device will be more culturally acceptable to populations because it integrates the delivery with the natural breastfeeding process. JustMilk has participated in Stage 1 of the E-Team program.
