Kohana – 2014 Open Minds

Although breast milk is undeniably the best nutrition for infants, only ~20% of the 2.5 million new working mothers can keep up with the demands of pumping. Just imagine the circumstances: taking an unnatural, fog-horn-like device into a depressing space, and sitting for 30 minutes every 2 hours while your co-workers check items off on their to-do lists. Although the use of breast pumps has sky rocketed in the last few years, spurred by continual illustrations of the immense health benefits of breast milk and the government’s decision to cover the cost of breast pumps for every new mother, there has been minimal innovation from the standard double electric vacuum pump over the past 20 years. To fill this incredibly high unmet need, we are developing The Gala Pump, the most natural and effective breast pump which mimics the age-old and trusted art of hand expression as an alternative to the high-powered, and often painful, suction of all other breast pumps. The pump fits into an undergarment and can be worn under clothing, enabling women to pump discretely in the presence of others, liberating women from their isolated and depressing pumping spaces. We believe our Gala Pump will significantly disrupt this $1 billion market. Kohana has recently been accepted into Stage 2 of the E-Team program.
