Rehabtics (www.rehabtics.com) is a Maryland-based start-up company developing a software system for physical rehabilitation using motion-controlled video games for use both in institutions and at home. The first product, ArmSPOT, uses Microsoft’s Kinect cameras to track users’ motions motions in real time in an accessible and engaging form of rehabilitation that encourages use and achieves improved patient recovery. Therapists are able to track patients’ progress 24/7 online, plan rehabilitation exercises, and provide feedback remotely. Rehabtics allows hospitals to reduce patients’ hospital length of stay and re-admission rates, relieving hospitals of increasing pressure to manage cost and improve patients’ outcomes. Founded in 2012, Rehabtics began at Johns Hopkins University and was awarded an NCIIA E-team grant, received funding from Maryland Technology Development Corporation’s Technology Commercialization Fund, and was selected as one of six AccelerateBaltimore start-ups in 2013. Rehabtics has completed a successful pilot with the Johns Hopkins Physical Rehabilitation Clinics and two rehabilitation centers. Rehabtics is signing contracts with Johns Hopkins Hospital to launch Rehabtics’ products in its outpatient clinics with thousands of patients. Rehabtics is also in advanced active discussion with several major healthcare providers in Maryland, Virginia, and DC.
