For 30 years, we have been dedicated to catalyzing innovation in service of people and the planet. Our founding, made possible by the prolific inventor Jerry Lemelson, was driven by the belief that invention could help solve the world’s greatest challenges and should be fostered through education and support.

A Timeline of Progress and Purpose
Established in 1995 as the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) with generous support from The Lemelson Foundation, VentureWell has had invention at its core from the very beginning.
Prolific inventor Jerome Lemelson presents his vision for NCIIA at Hampshire College. A new organization is born.
1995
First Course & Program Grants and Advanced E-Team grants awarded to further science and technology innovation and foster hands-on learning at institutions across the country.
1995
NCIIA membership reaches 50 institutions. First Annual Meeting (later our OPEN conference) takes place in Washington, D.C.
1997
First startup company forms (Xtracycle); first patent awarded for an E-Team-developed device (Automatic Double-Dutch). First $1 million in grants awarded.
1998-1999
NCIIA moves to Hadley, MA. $5 million in grants awarded. Partner network broadens to include the National Science Foundation (NSF).
2000-2002
Inaugural gathering of the Biomedical Engineering Innovation Design Entrepreneurship Alliance (BME-IDEA) in San Francisco is organized.
2003
Sustainable Vision grants program launches. First Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) schools and fellows chosen. Advanced Invention to Venture training within E-Team workshops is introduced.
2006
We partner with Stanford and NSF to launch Epicenter, a five-year program expanding innovation and entrepreneurship in engineering education.
2011
We partner with NSF to build the I-Corps™ program. Global impact expands through partnerships with USAID, the U.S. State Department, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We launch our own investment fund.
2011-2013
NCIIA rebrands as VentureWell to underscore our broadened reach and impact. Surpass $7.5 million in grants awarded to 500+ student teams.
2014
Our role as a program partner is deepened through engagements with NSF’s IUCRC initiative and the U.S. Department of State’s GIST program.
2016-2017
We are tapped to administer NIH’s $1.5 billion Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx®) Initiative to scale COVID-19 testing innovations.
2020
We shift to remote work model and grow to more than 100 staff members. We reach $1 billion in follow-on funding raised by VentureWell-supported startups.
2020
We partner with Qualcomm to create the Innovator Stipend Program. We celebrate the 100th cohort of the NSF I-Corps™ program.
2021-2022
We are selected by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) to manage the Investor Catalyst Hub, a nationwide health innovation network.
2023
We are chosen by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to spearhead a new ocean enterprise accelerator. We launch the Ecosystem Futures Fellowship.
