Some of the most important climate technologies being built today will never make it to market. Not because they’re not working, but because of structural funding gaps that no single capital source currently bridges. You likely have your own perspectives on what these gaps look like and where startups fall short. We welcome you to join us for Bridging the Idea-to-Impact Divide: Funding Realities for Climate Technologies, an invitation-only roundtable for people who want to explore solutions to this critical gap in climate technology financing.
Long development timelines, capital-intensive hardware, regulated markets with uncertain off-take, and diffuse returns that accrue to communities and ecosystems rather than cap tables are some of the challenges faced by climatetech founders. Meanwhile, the federal programs designed to bridge early-stage gaps, SBIR chief among them, are under pressure, leaving founders without a Plan B.
What We’ll Do Together
This convening is structured around three core questions:
- Where exactly does the capital stack break down, and for which kinds of companies?
- What financial structures, philanthropic tools, and coordination mechanisms could fill those gaps?
- What is the next step to solving this to make sure more technologies are able to cross the funding divide and make it to market?
Sessions will move from diagnosis to design: mapping the “missing middle” between proof-of-concept and commercial readiness, exploring catalytic capital structures, and identifying concrete actions, from patient capital vehicles to shared deal-flow networks to coordinated policy advocacy.
We’ll use structured small-group formats to maximize the quality of conversation with the aim of identifying both the top three structural gaps and the top three potential interventions surfaced by the end of the conversation.
Who This Convening Is For
We’re bringing together a focused group of:
- Angel investors and angel group leaders active in the climate or deep tech spaces
- Early-stage and impact-focused venture investors
- Program officers and investment staff at climate-focused foundations
- Patient and catalytic capital practitioners
The Climatetech Categories in Focus
Our conversation will center on technology sectors that are critically important and chronically underfunded—areas where the venture model structurally misaligns with development timelines and return profiles:
- Ocean enterprise and blue economy technologies
- Industrial decarbonization and hard-to-abate sectors
- Agriculture, food systems, and land use
- Built environment retrofits and infrastructure upgrades
- Clean water systems
Seats are limited, and attendance is by invitation only.
Idea to Impact Roundtables are curated, invitation-only gatherings of leaders whose insights are actively shaping the national innovation landscape. Hosted by VentureWell, these convenings will bring together funders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, ecosystem architects, and industry experts to discuss emerging thinking. We see them as an important opportunity to collectively catalyze new ideas and solutions to expand our country’s innovation ecosystem and increase the translation of science and technology.
