James Rains

James Rains

Georgia Institute of Technology

James Rains currently leads the undergraduate design program for the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech. He applies his 12 years of experience in the design and development of medical devices to create a curriculum that focuses on developing ideas that meet clinical needs. His goal is to educate students so that they understand every step required in developing a medical device or system—, starting at the customer needs and traveling to where it is used to treat a patient. Rains has been involved with devices that range from a biomaterial to treat tibia segmental defects to an electromagnetic targeting system for precise implantation of an orthopaedic implant. He has participated in all phases of product development from performing clinical observations, interviewing users, creating prototypes, all the way to seeing his idea transformed into an actual product being used in an operating room to help treat a disease.
