Robert H. Allen, PhD, PE is the Undergraduate Program Director for the Center of Bioengineering Innovation and Design in Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He has a joint faculty appointment in Gynecology and Obstetrics.
Prior to coming to Hopkins, Dr. Allen developed and taught team-based design programs since 1984; first at the University of Houston, subsequently at the University of Delaware. His research interests include design education and the mechanics of birth. He has authored or co-authored over 50 journal publications, over a dozen book chapters, and he has generated more than $2M in external support for research and teaching. His teaching includes presenting talks and training obstetricians and medical students in mechanical obstetric procedures. He is a named inventor on three issued patents and numerous pending patents. A retired professional engineer, he is a co-founder of Birth Injury Prevention, LLC, a company dedicated to improving maternal-child health.
