Shape the Future of Engineering Education for a Sustainable World

The Engineering for One Planet Scaling for Impact Workshop took place June 21-23, 2022.

With the financial support of the National Science Foundation (NSF), and in partnership with The Lemelson Foundation and VentureWell, this hands-on virtual workshop brought together 100 engineering educators, deans, students, professional engineers, and other key stakeholders.

Workshop participants helped contribute to the building of a 5-year roadmap to transform the national engineering curriculum across the United States by:

  • Equipping all future engineers across all disciplines with the fundamental skills and principles of environmental and social sustainability, and
  • Prioritizing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) practices.

public abstract for the EOP Scaling for Impact Workshop

VentureWell’s EOP Scaling for Impact Workshop will convene a diverse group of educators, engineers, and other stakeholders to explore and expand new approaches to scaling the EOP initiative. The EOP initiative seeks to transform the national engineering curriculum to include environmental sustainability as a core value in the profession. Our vision is that all engineers will be equipped with the skills, knowledge, and understanding to protect the planet and the life it sustains. This workshop will enable VentureWell and The Lemelson Foundation to increase awareness and attract new supporters to implement the EOP vision on a national scale. The EOP Scaling for Impact Workshop aligns with the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Division of Engineering Education and Centers, objectives for the creation of 21st century engineers and the discovery of new revolutionary technologies that are more sustainable.

VentureWell, in partnership with The Lemelson Foundation, will host the EOP Scaling for Impact Workshop, a fully online convening held June 21-23, 2022, to identify, explore, and develop a roadmap for scaling and sustaining the reach and impact of the EOP initiative. VentureWell will lead and manage all project activities, while The Lemelson Foundation will act as a strategic partner and leverage the significant expertise and community it has built through the initiative thus far. The collective goal of this convening is to generate recommendations and fuel action to transform engineering education so that all students encounter environmental sustainability principles as an integrated part of their education, and are equipped with the tools needed to incorporate these principles into their future research, careers, and innovations. To accomplish this, the EOP Scaling for Impact Workshop will ensure participants understand the EOP and its vision for reshaping engineering education; develop priorities and recommendations for refining the EOP Framework (a guide for professors to integrate environmental sustainability into their curriculum); ensure that JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion) practices are embedded into the EOP scaling efforts; strengthen existing collaborations and foster new relationships among participants; and surface approaches and recommendations that will inform the design of a 5-year roadmap for an EOP Collective Impact Initiative, which will enable us to achieve the EOP vision with maximum impact and scale. By assembling a large group of participants from multiple sectors and disciplines, representing many different identities and experiences, and by facilitating a series of in-depth discussions designed to elicit ideas and recommendations for advancing the EOP initiative beyond its current group of champions, we expect to learn critical information about the most promising ways to advance this initiative, which could not be obtained without such a convening. This includes insights pertaining to institutionalization of curricular change, approaches and mechanisms for engaging priority stakeholders and constituents, insights pertaining to the engagement of individuals from underrepresented groups, a greater understanding of how the EOP Framework should be revised to incorporate JEDI; and insights pertaining to metrics and approaches that can be used for effective measurement of progress toward the EOP vision.

criteria for a successful application

We anticipate more interest than we can accommodate for the workshop. We are working with a committee on an application review process aligned with justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) principles. A successful application must address all criteria below (as outlined in application questions) and will be evaluated on these criteria by an external review committee.
