The Alliance was held in conjunction with the Fall BMES meeting of 2009. We had a very successful meeting with a full agenda.

To BME Department Chairs:

You are invited to join us for the 7th meeting of BME-IDEA which will be convened October 7, 2009 in Pittsburgh, PA just prior to day the annual meeting of BMES. The Biomedical Engineering – Innovation, Design and Entrepreneurship Alliance (BME-IDEA) is a working group of 95 leading Biomedical Engineering departments across North America.

BME-IDEA is a day-long, working meeting focusing on best practices in innovation, design, technology transfer and entrepreneurship in biomedical engineering education. Featured sessions will include foundation leaders discussing emerging program opportunities, sessions on educating global engineers and effective approaches to design and product development education. As chair of your program, these issues are important to you. If you are not able to attend, we invite and encourage you to send an appropriate faculty member from your department.

We will be inviting select programs to prepare 5 – 10 minute “innovation snapshots” highlighting their most novel/innovative developments in graduate-level, experiential-learning courses in medical device innovation. The snapshots will be collected and featured on the BME-IDEA web site to motivate design/innovation/entrepreneurship education initiatives in BME programs worldwide.

Please tell us if your program is offering a graduate-level medical device innovation course and the name of the professor in charge. Send the information to Jack Linehan.

8:00am Undergraduate Biomedical Engineering – Providing Experiences and an Environment for Creative and Innovative Design
Mini panels will present highlights of emerging practice in three areas of current interest. Panels will include:

  1. Innovations in Preparing for the Undergraduate Design Experience
    Moderator: Amy Lerner
    Preparing students earlier in their undergraduate education for the design process by providing experiences in earlier in the curriculum that produce a design oriented mindset. Presenters will provide brief snapshots of some stage appropriate high impact ways to practice and learn the mindset required to successfully take on design in the context of realistic constraints.

  2. Spaces for Innovation

    What are the key aspects of facilities for innovation and prototyping undergraduate BME education? Given diverse activities, what is the best way to develop and outfit spaces for biomedical innovation? Supporting activities from mechanical prototypes to cell culture is a challenge. Presentations will present innovative models and structures to learn and be productive designers for today and into tomorrow.

11:15am Research and Tools for Analyzing BME Design Team Projects
Moderator: Phil Weilerstein
To improve design education, engineering educators need to better understand how student teams navigate the design process from concept to prototype. Tools that enable both real time assessment as well as retrospective analysis of the student design process will be presented. These methodologies utilize reflection and online assessments to analyze team effectiveness and accomplishments as the project evolves.

12:00pm Case Study of Practical Issues Associated with Commercialization of Medical Devices
Peter DeComo, Former Founder, Chairman & CEO of Renal Solutions, Inc., Currently Chairman & CEO of Alung Technologies, Inc.
Moderator: Jim Antaki
Medical device development and ultimately commercialization can be fraught with pitfalls. The speaker will highlight a case study illustrating real life challenges that must be overcome in order to obtain regulatory approvals followed by commercialization and a successful monetary exit for private and institutional investors. In this case the progress of the company was complicated and costly due to the development of a complex technology which was a first of its kind in the targeted market space and therapeutic application. The company successfully maneuvered through these challenges bringing to market a revolutionary therapeutic modality that will improve the clinical and quality of life outcomes for thousands of patients while at the same time reducing the total cost of care for the health care system.
AFTERNOON SESSIONS
1:30pm Global BME –Social Impact through BME design
Moderators: Maria Oden, Phil Weilerstein
Engineering Design for Global Health Needs: This workshop will provide a hands-on experience in global health engineering design. Participants will work in teams to develop a solution to a global health design challenge. Experience/consider the process from problem definition, user needs assessment, brainstorming, and prototype design to dissemination and see how global health design projects can be incorporated into a course. Hear short vignettes from faculty who are implementing these kinds of programs in their courses.

3:15pm Web-based Resources and Tools for Curricular Innovation

Students in Biomedical Engineering Design programs have become increasingly accustomed to using a wide range of online tools and materials. In this session, we will introduce two new web resources which will launch this fall, and discuss other tools that students currently use.

  1. ebiodesign (www.ebiodesign.org)
    Presenter: Christine Kurihara (Stanford University)
    This web site will provide guidance and teaching materials for faculty and students in design. As a companion to the Biodesign text, the site is designed to provide innovators with active web links to support the text, relevant content updates, short videos of experts in the field, and links to other useful resources as they apply the biodesign process to projects in industry or academia.
  2. BMEplanet (www.bmeplanet.org)
    Presenter: Erwin Gianchandani (University of Virginia)
    BMEplanet offers a Web 2.0 collaboration suite with interactive tools for students and other organizations to network and innovate.  The web site will provide a portal for ideas and internships, and project workspace for student design teams.
  3. Student web tools and resources
    Moderator: James Antaki (Carnegie Mellon University)
    Based on input from all participants, we will discuss other web resources that students have found useful for student project management, including the additional challenges and opportunities they present for design in biomedical engineering.
