INVITATION

The following letter was sent to the BME Department Chairs:

We would like to invite you—or up to two colleagues whom you designate—to join us for the next meeting of the Biomedical Engineering Innovation, Design & Entrepreneurship Alliance, more commonly referred to as the BME-IDEA consortium.

Over the past decade BME-IDEA has grown to include over 100 university programs with a focus on teaching and mentoring related to innovation and entrepreneurship in biomedical engineering. Our annual meetings provide you and/or members of your team with the opportunity to share best practices and new ideas with other faculty who lead programs and courses in medical technology design. Many past attendees have indicated that this is their favorite meeting of the numerous professional conferences they attend.

This year’s US-focused event will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 in Minneapolis, MN, with a kick-off reception the evening of Tuesday, October 4. As always, we have scheduled the event as a pre-conference workshop the day before the Annual Meeting of BMES. Given the location in the heart of the Twin Cities medical technology hub, our gathering will focus on effective collaborations between industry and academia as a core theme. Featured sessions will include:

  • Program snapshots: Rapid-fire examples of novel and best practices from universities across the country.
  • “Roundtables:” Group discussions focused on current issues in training/education in BME innovation, design & entrepreneurship led by faculty from premier universities, along with invited members from industry.
  • Industry and Alumni panels: Sessions devoted to the collaboration of industry with academia and learning from recent graduates about how their program prepared them for a job at a large company or a startup.

Invitations to BME-IDEA are limited to up to two faculty members per program. If you are not able to attend as chair, we encourage you to designate the appropriate faculty member(s) from your department. The most relevant faculty are those teaching capstone or other design-related courses.

Registration will open in late June; more information on BME-IDEA is available here.

Sincerely,

Art G. Erdman, University of Minnesota
John H. Linehan, Northwestern University
Paul G. Yock, Stanford University
